Skylight Stories Kawena Character Profile and Creation Sample - Protagonist So-Rin

Updated: Mar 28

It’s been so long since I last colored something, normally I just do sketches. Fallon has fine lines, So-Rin has bold ones to reflect their individual characters. I had to scrounge the house to find the 12 colored pencils I used between them, but I think I made it work well enough… It was so refreshing to try using colors again! Although it’s a bit difficult making lighter shades without white (understandably) so I made their colors bolder than they might actually be. Either way having sketches is a great help when writing!

And here’s So-Rin—I redressed him in his best buckskin clothes after my latest revisions to chapter 1. I have a bunch of notes all around him as reminders, so it's definitely more conceptual or rough-sketch level rather than something I would consider "finished."

He’s a bit of a girly-looking guy (don’t say it’s because I have a hard time drawing guys! Though I wouldn’t deny it…) and I originally thought of him as a big-sister type of character to Fallon when I considered writing from Fallon's perspective. Probably my favorite part about him would have to be his piercing eyes. I only penciled in his wings in this one, so I'll have to redraw him later. Designed after a Great Blue Heron, his coloring may be cold but he exudes a warm, confident character. He’s so tall he doesn’t even fit my scanner! His clothes are a lot thicker than Fallon’s and have coarse stitches/bindings, but he does his best with what he has.

Be sure to check out my story featuring him! You can find a creative writing sample and chapter 1 of the story uploaded here as part of my portfolio.

Along with my plans to publish an Illustrated Novel, of course there must be pictures - I would love to see Fan Art if you are a fellow artist! Who knows? It might even get published as part of the book :)

How self-confident is the character? Very. Bounces back from losses quickly to challenge again.

Does the character seem ruled by emotion or logic or some combination thereof? Emotion.

What would most embarass this character? Realizing something is not as he thought it was / being told that his teacher is wrong would make him mad, then he would challenge the person to something, and being proven wrong would be embarrassed.

Emotional Characteristics

Strengths/Weaknesses: Smart, but doesn’t always think things through / physically above average strength / speed.

Introvert or Extrovert? Extroverted, but never been around more than teacher and a few animals.

How does the character deal with anger? Immediately acts.

With conflict? Fights / faces the challenge.

With change? Wonder and awe for new things that are good/nice, strongly rejects what he doesn’t like.

With loss? Pretends loss never happened to the best of his ability / replaces or fills the void if he can. Tends to get locked away and forgotten. Lives very much in the moment.

What frightens this character? The thought of losing something / of having it disappear entirely.

What makes this character happy? Playing games and having fun winning! (or losing can be fun too! Means fun in the future.) Having someone appreciate him/teacher.

Is the character judgmental of others? Curious, comparative judgment (“that’s not like Teacher would do it… Not what Teacher told me…”)

Is the character generally polite or rude? Can be somewhat rude – never developed a filter, has few social skills. States the obvious. There would be no white elephant in the room with him.

Spiritual Characteristics

Does the character believe in God? Knows of Cress and Nassima, the progenitors of sea and sky – curious about the “sea.”

What are the character's spiritual beliefs? Teacher taught him of Nassima, of the air and the flow of waves, all are connected…

Is religion or spirituality a part of this character's life? Yes.

I would love to know what you think! I very rarely draw guys, much less write them, so any insight or ideas would be very much welcomed ~
